The Chatbot Grew a Lab Bench

Anthropic's Claude Science turns the model from a research advisor into a 60-tool workbench that keeps its own receipts — a bet that reproducibility, not raw intelligence, is AI's next frontier in science.

For three years, the pitch for AI in science was essentially a smarter search engine. Ask a good question, get a good answer, maybe a literature summary you would otherwise have spent a week assembling. Useful, but the scientist still had to walk over to the actual tools — the sequencing pipeline, the structure viewer, the notebook full of half-remembered R scripts — and do the work.

At the end of June, Anthropic quietly moved the goalposts. Its new product, Claude Science, is not a better answer machine. It is a workbench. And the most interesting thing about it is not what it can do, but what it writes down while doing it.

What Anthropic actually shipped

Claude Science, announced June 30 and rolling out in beta, packages a coordinating agent with more than 60 built-in scientific capabilities spanning genomics, single-cell analysis, structural biology, proteomics, and cheminformatics. In practice that means a researcher can ask it to design a CRISPR screen, run quality control on single-cell RNA-sequencing data, render a three-dimensional protein structure, pull and analyze the relevant PubMed literature, and refine the resulting figures until they are close to publication-ready — inside one interface that also speaks to Jupyter notebooks and R.

It runs locally on Linux or macOS, or on a remote machine, which matters more than it sounds: a lot of real biology data cannot casually leave the building. This is the successor to Claude for Life Sciences, the more modest assistant Anthropic launched back in October 2025, which already showed the direction of travel — on a protocol-understanding benchmark, Claude Sonnet 4.5 edged out the human baseline, 0.83 to 0.79. The jump from that to a 60-tool agentic workbench is the story of the last nine months in miniature: the model stopped advising from the sidelines and picked up the instruments.

The part that actually matters

Here is the line buried in the announcement that deserves top billing: Claude Science produces auditable artifacts with documented output histories. Every figure, every intermediate result, carries a record of how it was made.

If you have never tried to reproduce someone else's computational biology paper, it is hard to convey how radical that is. Science does not mainly have a speed problem; it has a reproducibility problem. Surveys have for years found that a majority of researchers have failed to reproduce another lab's results — and a striking share have failed to reproduce their own. The usual culprit is not fraud but amnesia: an undocumented parameter, a package version nobody logged, a preprocessing step done by hand at 2 a.m. and never written down.

An agent that does the analysis and automatically keeps the receipts attacks exactly that failure mode. The optimistic reading is that agentic tools could become the best lab notebooks science has ever had, precisely because they never get bored of documentation. The cautious reading is that a perfectly logged pipeline can still be confidently, reproducibly wrong — and that a tidy audit trail can lend an unearned air of authority to a hallucinated intermediate step. Both readings are correct. Which one wins depends on whether scientists treat the artifact history as evidence to check or as a reason to stop checking.

Anthropic is eating its own cooking

The more revealing move is what Anthropic is doing with the tool internally. Alongside the launch, the company stood up its own in-house drug-discovery program, led by life-sciences head Eric Kauderer-Abrams, aimed deliberately at neglected and rare diseases — the targets that traditional pharma economics tend to skip because the addressable market is too small.

That is a double signal. Commercially, it is a bet that the fastest way to make the tool good is to depend on it. But it is also a quiet admission of where AI-for-science creates the most value: not in the crowded, well-funded blockbuster races, but in the long tail of problems that were never unprofitable to solve so much as unaffordable to attempt. If an agentic workbench genuinely lowers the fixed cost of a discovery campaign, the economics of the neglected tail are the first thing that should change.

To seed an ecosystem around it, Anthropic is also backing up to 50 external "AI for Science" projects with as much as $30,000 in model credits each, with infrastructure partner Modal chipping in compute — applications closed July 15, awards by the end of the month. It is a modest sum next to a real research budget, but it is aimed at exactly the graduate students and small labs who will stress-test whether the workbench holds up outside a demo.

The bigger picture

Step back and Claude Science fits a pattern we have been tracking all year: AI moving down the stack from talking about work to doing it. We wrote in June about self-driving laboratories that let AI run physical experiments end to end, and about the widening gap between a molecule an AI can design in months and a clinic that still takes years to test it. Claude Science lives right in that seam. It compresses the design-and-analysis half of the loop dramatically while doing nothing about the wet-lab, trial, and regulatory half — which remains stubbornly governed by biology and time.

So the honest way to read this launch is not "AI will cure disease." It is narrower and more durable: the daily labor of computational science — the pipelines, the QC, the figures, the documentation — is being absorbed into an agent, and the agent is being built to show its work. Whether that makes science faster is almost the boring question. The one worth sitting with is whether it makes science more checkable. Anthropic has bet that the paper trail is the product. Now we get to watch a few thousand scientists find out whether they trust it.
